EA Sports has been making quite a number of changes to its various sports series and the way they play, but FIFA 14 has definitely seen the biggest changes this year. Whether or not it will resonate well with fans is up in the air, however; they are much needed changes, but they are drastic and could take awhile to fully get used to. Even though the Ignite Engine is not featured in the current FIFA 14 releases, it is still evident that the company did not simply piece together something simple to lazily get through the current line of consoles even though we are at the end of the current generation.

It’s safe to say that the UI that FIFA 14 sports makes a great first impressions, offering a brand new UI to lead off the next generation. With clean and vivid menus that welcome the player right from the start, it’s easy to slip into just about any mode. The interface can actually be compared properly to the Xbox 360 dashboard, following a simple layout and navigation system that only needs a few analog stick flicks to access.

On the whole, much of the game is still the same, as FIFA 14 offers game modes like Manager, Virtual Pro, Online Friendlies, Ultimate Team and Head Seasons, but they’re still just as compelling and thorough as ever. Statistics from the real world always keep teams up to date while the EA Sports Football Club maintains a record of earned points.

Menus are not the only place FIFA 14 has seen improvement, as the new Precision Control and Pure Shot game mechanics give you ultimate control over the ball at all times. Electronic Arts claims the ball physics in FIFA 14 are the best yet and they are absolutely right. With these changes comes a boost in the artificial intelligence of both your teammates and rivals, making each game feel like the real thing.

The developer has tweaked career mode, including the option to maintain a real world team until the transfer window in January. There is also a Global Transfer Network that hides the overall rating of a player, so scouts are absolutely necessary to find the best youthful players. The scouting progress will appear on a tile of the main page, offering a more engaging experience than simply seeking out the players with the best OVRs, forcing players to think about their purchases.

Because of this major overhaul to the gameplay, FIFA 14 is one game that is truly essential for any fan of football. The difference is huge enough that it could likely pull back old veterans who had given up on the series long ago, though it’s possible a few new fans may be put off by the same changes.

Of course, FIFA 14 still has a few spots that could be improved, such as the crowd that is still rendered very poorly, sticking out for the eye sore that it is. On the whole, however, FIFA 14 is proof from EA Sports that the company is not resting and waiting out the line of consoles until the next big thing comes out.

FIFA 14 was released for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
